Hudson Super Six racer - 1917

Debuting on May 10th 1917 at the Uniontown, Pennsylvania speedway the Hudson Super Six racers featured a long tapered tail and engine modifications that included using two carburetors, Magnalite pistons and an auxilary high pressure fuel system amongst other changes..

Our client having acquired a Hudson chassis and engine, needed the body design to be re-created and asked us to achieve this goal.

Prior to starting, we were given a number of pictures of the vehicle. A little known but important part of our work is that we are good and locating information that was not hitherto known to the client. In this case, we managed to find a number of important photographs, an article containing technical information and pictures and made contact with a gentleman knowledgable about the car who lived in the United States who sent further pictures. In fact the client called emailed stating the we were like "Hercule Poirot"!

Our first task was to scan the chassis rails of the Hudson to ensure the body buck would fit correctly.

Following scanning the chassis the body buck was designed taking account of the pictures available and scan data.

Working from pictures is problematical as the lens, camera, distance from subject and other issues are unknown. 3D Engineers have developed our own techniques to overcome or mitigate these issues and we are one of the few firms happy to take on 3D design work using pictures alone.

Prior to building the buck in real life, we created visualizations and a 30cm long approx model to ensure that the design was as correct as possible. One of the main reasons for doing this was that the tail of the Hudson was slightly offset it was raced on American board tracks where all the corners want the same way. To get this part of the design correct took longer than we hoped, but the results speak for themselves.

The client was very happy with the model and as a present to him, we are in the process of putting it in a display case as part of our service.

To conclude, we were proud to receive an email from our client after completion of the project stating "I'm quite delighted with the finished buck............. that is my solid opinion".
